All In A Day's Work
by Candida Tait

I love the smell, the taste, the sound of coffee. I lay awake in bed, early morning just waitng to hear it purculating. Now don't get me wrong, if there were a Starbucks or Tim Hortons just outside my door, I'd pay the buck or two just to get a cup however, there is something to be said about a freshly homemade pot just made fresh in the morning while in the comfort confines of ones own home. You don't have to worry about someone seeing you. Heck, you could even drink it naked, or in the bathtub, or have it served in bed. This is how I like it. Served to me by my honey who makes some coffee just on her way out the door before work.
I usually set the coffee the night before. Only one evening I forgot to set it. You know what she did? She perculated enough coffee to make just one cup. Her excuse was that she was running late and couldn't wait for the entire pot to finish. I ended up going to work without a coffee. I bit everyones head off in the office for a good part of the morning. They were all volunteering to go and get me a cup or make a pot at the office. I wasn't going to budge. I had a violent headache. Someone was going to have to die, either that or I was going to have to pop an aspirin. I chose the latter of the two deciding I couldn't do without any employees that day.
How could she be so insensitive? Heather was someone who would open doors for people, lend money without expecting it in return, she was usually so selfless but not this morning. Well she was going to have to do a lot of begging. She knewÊI couldn't get through and entire day without his coffee.
The day flew by for everyone else but me.ÊÊI opened upÊmy ofÊmyÊbooks only toÊfind thatÊIÊhad missed an appointment with an important client. It wasÊbooked the the Java Club of all places. WasÊI being unreasonable? I quickly shook that feeling off justifying that it was the principle of the matter. I never would have done that to her.ÊÊBesides it takes what, all of 10 extra seconds to make aÊfull pot of coffee?
It was just aboutÊquitting time whenÊIÊwas buzzed byÊmyÊsecretary.Ê"What is it Kim?"
"Er, there is someone here to seeÊyou Mr. Hall" she stammered. Everyone had been on pins and needles all day,ÊI could hear in her voice thatÊshe would rather haveÊran outÊof the officeÊthan to disturb me. I relaxedÊmy toneÊreplying to her that it was alright to send them in.
ToÊmyÊsurprise it was my wife Kate whoÊentered the office. In one hand was some flowers. Blue carnations, my favorite. But in the other hand was the biggest mug of coffee one had ever seen. It could have even been the size of a coffee pot.ÊShe smiled "Honey, you once told me you couldn't go an entire day without a cup of coffee"Ê
"Well, the day isn't over yet, so here is your coffee."
"I'm sorry I never made a full pot."
"That's okay, I never really missed it." I said.
My wife raised an eyebrow as she looked at me . "Okay, maybe just a little." while holding up my fingers to just how little I meant.
"I guess I will have my pot of coffee now,ÊI said as we both laughed."
"All in a days work" Kate whispered before giving me a kiss." Yes", I agreed. "All in long days work."
